The Boys on Dennis & Carl

For these interviews, I spoke with MIke, Bruce and Al on the phone and their engineers sent us a CD of the interviews, which we then edited. Brian was special because we spent an afternoon at his house and he was just so great - very open, generous and VERY funny. He obviously loved his brothers very much and it's great to hear him talking about Carl "singing his god-damned butt off." If Carl and Dennis were around today, it would be interesting to see what would have happened. Would there still be a Beach Boys? Or, maybe more interrestingly, perhaps there would have been a group featuring the Wilson brothers. To think about what these three guys could do together is mind-boggling. Especially when you think how much Dennis and Carl grew as musicians and composers in the seventies. Lindsey Buckingham, who most of us know is a huge Beach Boys fan, once remarked that "Dennis was halfway to being Brian in the studio when he died" (I'm paraphrasing). The song Lindsey wrote about Dennis and his brothers (DW Suite from his 1984 "Go Insane" album) is both chilling and beautiful.
I'd love to know what you think about what would have happened if Dennis and Carl were still alive today.
Once again, thank you to Brian, Mike, Al and Bruce for your great cooperation and enthusiasm for the project. Hopefully we've helped extend the band's legacy just a little bit to the young fans who get their music on the Web. You guys are going to be around forever and you've made the world a better place.
Imagining Dennis being with us today is difficult to fathom. By the late '70s and the early '80s, he was so far gone, it would have taken a major intervention by his family and friends to get him out of his habits. Even then, it's hard to say if Dennis would have stayed clean. Intervention aside, had Dennis not drowned, it's likely he would have died another way. Sad as it may be, from what I've read, at the time everyone kinda knew he'd die soon. Even when it happened, his family and friends mourned his loss, but at the same time weren't exactly surprised.
Carl is a different story. If he had been able to survive his cancer to still be with us today, it brings about a number of variables, mainly because of the chain of events after he passed away: Al leaving the band, Brian coming back onstage for the first time in years and releasing "Imagination" and so on.
I suppose if Carl had lived, either The Beach Boys would have remained together, or Carl and Al would have split off from Mike & Bruce. Who knows.
The bigger questions is what would have happened with Brian getting back onstage ... would he have resumed touring with The Beach Boys, or would he have still gone solo? Or both? Would "Imagination" exist, or would it have been a different album?
More importantly...would there be a completed version of SMiLE if Brian stayed with the BBs?
Sometimes I think things happen for a reason, and while Dennis and Carls' passings are tragic losses for the music world ... there has been some good as a result, including Brian's resurgent career and renewed friendship with Al (these may not be direct results ... but since there's no way to know if it would have happened otherwise, you get the idea).
Eiher way, I take solace in the fact that Dennis and Carl are up there somewhere, probably having a jam session with John, George, Roy, and many of the other greats that have left us before their time.
Hearty congratulations to all involved in this project. Thank you guys.
If there's one thing we learned from Spinal Tap it's that splinter bands never quite cut it.
